Meet Our Staff


Nicholas Fawaz

is the founder of Language Learning Center. He has received his teaching certification in teaching Arabic, English, and ESL from Wayne State University, and he is a current doctoral student in the field of curriculum and instruction in Wayne state University. He is currently teaching Arabic and English as a second language for high school level at “Farmington Public Schools” Harrison High School and Arabic at Macomb Community College and John Hopkins University online (Center for Talented Youth). A strong advocate of hands-on activities, inquiry based learning, and online teaching. Nicholas has been a member of a committee that developed high school Arabic curriculum with Michigan State University. He involves his students in variety of project based learning activities which help students to practice the Arabic language outside the classroom, and technology-infused activities that provide students with more opportunities to use their Arabic language to help others. His professional interests focus on communicative approaches to language teaching, thematic planning, and cooperative learning. Nicholas Fawaz has been the instructional coach for Startalk program for 4 years in Detroit. In addition, he serves as council’s teacher assistant for Michigan Arabic Teachers’ Council, and he is a member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Shaima Basuni

has earned undergraduate degree in social studies from University of Michigan and Master’s degree in teaching foreign languages “Arabic” from Wayne State University. She has been working with K-12 students since 2007 in different schools and positions. Currently, she is working as an Arabic teacher at Ann Arbor Public schools- Michigan. She creates the Ann Arbor Public Schools elementary Arabic language and culture curriculum for Third, Fourth and Fifth grades. She is also teaching Arabic online different language levels at John Hopkins University. She is an active board member at the council of Michigan Arabic Language and assistant instructor for the summer StarTalk Program of 2015. Randa Hourani

has earned her undergraduate and graduate degree from Wayne State University. Randa has been teaching for 28 years in the Detroit Public schools. She is currently teaching Arabic/French at Renaissance High School in Detroit. Randa is a native Arabic Speaker. She has participated in many workshops for teaching world languages especially Arabic with Startalk and University of Michigan. Randa is a member of ACTFL (The Teaching Council of Foreign Languages), NABE (National Association of Bilingual Education) and the Michigan Arabic Teachers’ Council. Randa has always had high expectation of her students and helped them build up their self- confidence to become fluent in the target language and as well as better members in this global society.
